What is Nitrofurantoin?

1. Definition

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic. It has antibacterial effect, especially sensitive to Escherichia coli, and then more sensitive to Aerobacter and Proteus. In addition, P. aeruginosa is usually resistant to this drug and has no effect.

Nitrofurantoin is mainly used clinically to treat infections caused by sensitive bacteria. For example, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, this kind of infection caused by bacteria, especially for acute, simple lower urinary tract infection can also be used for the prevention of urinary tract infection.

2. Nitrofurantoin macrocrystal

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystal are synthetic chemicals with controlled crystal size. The macrocrystalline nitrofurantoin is a larger crystalline form of nitrofurantoin.

Compared with nitrofurantoin, nitrofurantoin absorbs large crystals more slowly and excretes less. Blood concentrations at therapeutic doses are usually low. It is highly soluble in urine and may turn brown.

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystal are an antibacterial agent for specific urinary tract infections.

3. Nitrofurantoin brand name

Macrobid is the brand name for nitrofurantoin, an antibiotic used to treat or prevent urinary tract infections.

4. Mechanism of action

Escherichia coli is most sensitive to this product, and some strains of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria such as Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Proteus, Klebsiella are sensitive to this product, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is usually Product resistance.

This product has antibacterial effect on Gram-positive bacteria such as Enterococcus. The antibacterial activity of the product is not affected by pus and tissue decomposition products, and has strong activity in acid urine.

The antibacterial action mechanism is to interfere with the oxidoreductase system in the bacteria, thereby blocking its metabolic process. The product is an enteric sugar-coated tablet, which is yellow after removal of the coating.

5. Nitrofurantoin interactions

A. Drugs that can cause hemolysis combined with furantoin have a tendency to increase the hemolytic response.

B. Both probenecid or benzofurone can inhibit the renal tubular secretion of furantoin, resulting in an increase in the plasma concentration and / or half-life of the latter, while a decrease in urine concentration and a decrease in efficacy. The probenecid dose should be adjusted.

C. This product is used in combination with antacids to reduce the absorption of this medicine. This product can reduce the antibacterial effect of nalidixic acid, because they have antagonistic effects, so the two cannot be used together.

Nitrofurantoin uses

1. Nitrofurantoin drug class

Nitrofurantoin oral capsules are used to prevent and treat urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria. Nitrofurantoin can also be used as an oral suspension.

2. Nitrofurantoin tablets

It is used for acute simple lower urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and other bacteria, and can also be used for the prevention of urinary tract infection.

Nitrofurantoin dosage: Oral adults 50 to 100 mg once, 3 to 4 times a day. Low dose for simple lower urinary tract infections; children over 1 month take 5 to 7 mg / kg of body weight daily in 4 divided doses.

The course of treatment is at least 1 week, or at least 3 days after the urine culture turns negative. For the prevention of recurrent episodes of urinary tract infections, 50-100 mg a day for adults, 1 mg / kg a day for children.

The hazards of Nitrofurantoin

The most common side effects of nitrofurantoin are nausea, headaches and flatulence. Less common adverse events (less than 1% of those taking the drug) include:
1. Gastrointestinal tract: diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting

2. Nervous system: dizziness, drowsiness, amblyopia

3. Respiratory tract: acute lung hypersensitivity

4. Allergies: itching, hives

5. Skin disease: hair loss

6. Miscellaneous: fever, chills, discomfort

7. Patients should be advised that nitrofurantoin will make the urine brown; this is completely harmless.

8. Some of the more serious but rare side effects of nitrofurantoin have caused concern. These include lung reactions, liver toxicity and neuropathy.

Detection Method of Nitrofurantoin Test

AHD Test is based on the competitive inhibition immune Nitrofurantoin Metabolite assay.

During the lateral flow procedure, AHD residues in extracted samples will bind to the colloidal gold-labeled specific monoclonal antibodies, inhibit the combination of antibodies.

The AHD-BSA conjugates on the NC membrane, leading to color changes of the test line (line T).

Samples of Nitrofurantoin Test

Samples include: pork, chicken, fish, shrimp and other aquatic products.

Detection Limit of Nitrofurantoin Test

The LOD may change according to requirement or specimen's difference, please refer to kit instruction for further details.

Importance of Nitrofurantoin Test

Nitrofurantoin Test can help manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and the public monitor product quality and help humans protect their health.

Summary

Nitrofurans have been widely used as additives for poultry, aquatic products and pig growth due to their very good antibacterial and pharmacokinetic properties.

However, during a long period of experimental research, it was found that nitrofuran drugs and metabolites can cause experimental animals to become cancerous and genetic mutations, which is why this kind of drugs have been banned from use in treatment and feed.

The Nitrofurantoin Test for Aquatic Products kit provided by BALLYA can effectively detect furantoin contained in aquatic products. It can ensure the quality of the tested aquatic products, its operation is simple, and the test results comply with EU standards.
